The state is divided into branches, each with separate and independent powers and areas of responsibility so that no branch has more power than the other branch. The legislative branch is congress, the executive branch is the president, and the judiciary branch is the Supreme Court. They have a checks and balance system which is a way for the other branches to manage the different branches to make sure they aren't misusing any funds. The separation of powers and the checks and balance system helps prevent against tyranny.
